What is a birth Doula?

A birth doula is a trained childbirth professional. They provide continuous physical and emotional support to the birthing person and help parents make a birth plan by providing information and education. Doulas offer support throughout labor by using different comfort measures such as breathing, relaxation, movement and positioning. Most importantly, doulas help the birthing person have a safe and satisfying childbirth as that person defines it; they do not judge parents on their birthing choices.

Benefits of having a doula

Birth doulas have been shown to help birth outcomes in the following ways:

  • 28% less likely to have a cesarean section or belly birth

  • 31% less likely to use synthetic oxytocin to speed up labor

  • 9% less likely to use any pain medication

  • 34% less likely to rate their childbirth experience negatively

How is a doula different from a nurse?

A doula’s sole responsibility is to support the birthing person. Unlike nurses, midwives, medical providers, a doula does not perform any medical tasks. Doulas adhere to parents’s birth plan and contract not hospital/birth center policy. A doula will be there for you throughout your labor providing continuous support and ensuring your choices are heard and validated.
